About the office
The City Building Commission Office for the City of Austin is committed to upholding the City’s Building Codes. Our experienced team handles a wide range of codes and zoning ordinances, ensuring that the city operates within the bounds of the law while striving for the betterment of our residents.
Our duties include:
- Permit Applications: Residential, Commercial, and Meter Permit Applications.
- Ordinance Fees: Assists our Clerk-Treasurer’s office with assessing and collecting permit fees.
- Code Enforcement: Investigates and Assesses Code Enforcement throughout the City. Property, Grass & Weed, Signage, and Fence.
- Rental Registrations: Assists our Clerk-Treasurer’s office with rentals and short term rentals registrations.
- Inspection Programs: Inspects residential and commercial building permits.
- Fire Protection Systems: Inspects residential and commercial Fire Protection Systems.
- Contractor License: Investigates and Assesses Contractor’s Licenses Applications and Renewals.

Change of Zoning Process, Criteria, Fees, and Checklist
Please note that a change of zoning is a legal procedure and a very strict process must be followed. Completing either the online application or dropping off an application in-person is only one step and there are multiple steps that must be followed. Please make sure that you print out, read, and follow the exact process stated within the Rezoning Process, Documentation, and Fees document located within this section. Your application is not accepted in full, nor will the process be started until the application is completed, fees are paid, and all items related to the rezoning process, criteria, and checklist are fully completed, paid for, and publication dates have been set.
