Austin and the Civil War
Indiana was a Union State
Indiana’s role in the Civil War is often overlooked and even confusing to some historians. Located in the Midwest Indiana was clearly a Union State, but state leaders were known to express public sympathy to the Confederacy. In the southern part of Indiana there were strong ties to Kentucky, which was known to support both Union and Confederate policies.
While there were conflicting emotions among the Indiana General Assembly, Indiana Governor Oliver P. Morton clearly supported the Union and President Abraham Lincoln. On April 13th, 1861, the Governor called meetings among state leaders to determine Indiana’s position on the Southern rebellion. Overwhelmingly and led by Governor Morton’s support, Indiana voted to remain in the Union, and to support President Lincoln’s request to send troops to engage in battle against the Confederacy.
Statewide support was immediate, and initially so many Hoosiers came forward to support President Lincoln, that thousands had to be turned away. In Austin and Scott County Indiana, hundreds of men rallied to support the Union and joined Union forces as members of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry. During the Civil War over 210,000 Hoosiers enlisted in the Union Army.
The Town of Austin Heeds the Call
Local Men Volunteer for Union Army
In discussing Austin’s early history very little has been said about the town’s support of the Union Army and their willingness to serve. In the four years of the Civil War 106 men enlisted in the Union Army, and gave Austin Indiana, as their official residence. Ranging in ages from 17 to their mid-40s, these brave men were volunteers who understood the significance of their duties. Several of the 106 men who heeded the call returned home wounded and left crippled for life. Others were even less fortunate and never returned to Austin, their bodies buried in mass graves, their tombstones unmarked. Families of a soldier, who had been killed in action, often learned of their death through a letter from an officer of the company, which they served.

Rediscovering the Tombstones of “Scott County’s Unknown Civil War Soldiers”
A group of Veterans linked to Austin, pose with one of the rediscovered tombstones of Scott County’s Unknown Civil War Soldiers buried in 1863 at the Whitson Austin Cemetery. The second tombstone is about 30-feet behind the group and to the left. The tombstones had been covered in mildew until a recent cleaning and were almost forgotten histories.
